Expanded Polystyrene Environmental Information –

Contrary to popular belief, waste EPS is 100% recyclable. At Molygran we offer a complete polystyrene recycling service and recycle 100% of our unused polystyrene. We are also furthering our commitment  to reducing the little waste we currently generate. Read more about our recycling service here

Expanded polystyrene like most plastics gets a bad name – it is important however, to remember that not all plastics are the same.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has a lower environmental impact than most other packaging materials (including paper pulp, wood, fibreboard and paper) taking into account energy consumption, global warming potential, water and air pollution.

Good packaging prevents breakages, reducing the total cost and energy of all supply. EPS is lightweight, cheap and easy to handle meaning it is viable for small volume manufacturing.

Ideal for insulating buildings, vehicles, foodstuffs and particularly suited to “difficult” shapes such as inserts to all components e.g. window frames, lintels and cavity closures. Using EPS insulation minimises the use of natural resources within the home. Each kilogram of oil used to produce on EPS insulation panel will save a residential home 150kg of oil used for heating

Expanded Polystyrene Production & Recycling –

EPS is 98% air so is one of the lightest packaging material available. Reducing packaging weight lowers fuel consumption during transport reducing overall environmental impact.

Pentane is used during the manufacture process as a blowing agent. Pentane releases no CFC’s or HCFC’s. Therefore, no toxic substances or gases are used or produced in the manufacture of EPS. Expanded polystyrene is stable, non carcinogenic and does not degrade so there is no pollution.

During the manufacture process steam is also used. However, reusing the water many times ensures water consumption is still very low. Add to this reintroducing any waste or off cuts of EPS back into the production process manfacturing is very green!

Expanded polystyrene is 100% recyclable. At present the UK already recycled thousands of tonnes of EPS every year. The EPS supply chain features recycling at all points before consumer use. At Molygran we compact our EPS waste – reducing the size by between 40-95%. Therefore, we ship more EPS per lorry load to recyclers reducing environmental impact from transport.

Because EPS is bulky and the majority is white it is often very visible so thought of as a large contributor to municipal waste. EPS actually only contributes 0.1% of municipal waste! Although we strongly believe that all EPS should be recycled if it does end up in landfill it is important to remember that because it does not decompose it doesn’t contribute to methane or any other chemicals in the atmosphere.

Molygran’s Commitments –

At Molygran, each job is bespoke. We test and check every design ensuring the most efficient use of the EPS block. Committing to constant improvement of lean manufacturing. We continuously challenge ourselves to improve our production process and waste even less EPS.

The entire Molygran team is currently aiming at another 50% reduction, offering suggestions and trialing new methods on our sophisticated CNC machinery. Our target is to reduce defects, off-cuts, over-production and waiting time.

None of our waste EPS ever goes to landfill. But that’s not good enough for Molygran. We’re going to drive down our waste figures still further through our commitment to educating people and businesses and our recycling service!

You can be sure, with us, your polystyrene products are not harming our future.
