Plastic packaging gets a bad name when it is commonly more environmentally friendly than other packaging materials.
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) has a lower environmental impact than most other comparable packaging materials (including paper pulp, wood, fibreboard and paper) taking into account energy consumption, global warming potential, water and air pollution.
However, expanded polystyrene does many more jobs than keeping your TV protected when it’s on its way to you!
You will find EPS in many other industries including construction, merchandising, advertising and display.
Expanded polystyrene is 100% recyclable. At present the UK already recycles thousands of tonnes of EPS every year. The EPS supply chain features recycling at all points before consumer use. At Molygran we compact and recycle all of our EPS waste as well as taking individuals & other business waste polystyrene to recycle free of charge!

Recycling at Molygran
Since the launch of our recycling service we have been inundated with inquires from both businesses and individuals. As a company ,who feel passionately about recycling EPS, even we are amazed by the sheer volume of people interested. We recycled a staggering 37 tonnes of EPS in 2018/19 and hope to recycle a further 50+ tonnes in 2019/20.
There are clear benefits of recycling polystyrene for businesses outside of environmental responsibility and concern. Molygran recycle white, clean and dry expanded polystyrene free of charge, this saves businesses massive waste and/ or landfill costs. We have also been able with some customers to re-cut their waste to produce a new product that they were previously buying as virgin material. For our customers massively cost reducing as well as a brilliant way to reuse their waste.
One of the most surprising developments we have found whilst offering recycling. The amount of individuals who will go out of their way to ensure their polystyrene waste is recycled responsibly. We have received multiple bags from recycling group collecting in their community, polystyrene packaging from TV’s, White Goods and everything in between. We have even received EPS packaging sent through the post from all over the UK.
In the future we are looking to continue encouraging EPS recycling across the UK. We are currently lobbying with our local council for EPS recycling skips to be placed on local waste management centers – which would be recycled by Molygran. We are also looking to help create a network of expanded polystyrene recyclers across the UK. This will mean we are able to recycle as much polystyrene as possible with minimal energy consumption.
